What is Magical Realism?

Published

Magical realism is a unique literary movement that was given its name in the 1920s, in the context of painting. Even though Latin American authors are credited with making magical realism what it is today, the genre existed in writing before it was named, and today includes writers from across the globe. This genre of literature is about the real world, and the magical elements that form part of it. By including magic as a normal part of everyday life, the line between reality and magic becomes blurred.

Most magical realism novels take place in a setting in the earthly world that is familiar to readers. The stories have magical or fantastical elements that do not occur in the real world, but are presented as normal. The magic is not explained, on purpose, to normalise it as part of everyday life. Magical realism writers implicitly critique society. In this genre, there is no narrative arc (beginning, middle, end) and plot advancement and conflict can happen at any time.
